Rankin Photography
Rankin became very well known for his portraiture of bands, artists and supermodels. Having photographed almost everyone from the Queen of England to world famous superstars, Rankin is often seen as a celebrity photographer where he reveals them in a more personal way compared to the attitudes of the press and media. However, his work goes into more detail than just that; he edits photographs he takes for magazines and fashion designers for companies such as Nike, Swatch, Dove and a variety of lingerie. Rankin is a famous photographer and has now published in total over 30 books, and his work is almost always broadcasted all around the world, as well as at his own gallery in London. Rankin lives in London with his wife and son and now helps film documentaries with the BBC.
Written Analysis
This photograph was created and photographed by Rankin . The theme of this photograph is modelling and portraiture photo; the purpose of the photograph is for fashion, body art and possibly advertising.
The most important thing in the photograph that Rankin focuses on is the women's individuality and her unique body art. The photograph was taken in a studio with a white back drop. I believe that that the image is looking closely at the detail of women’s tattoo of a snake. In this photograph I can see that the image has been digitally manipulated in Photoshop; this is because the photo is very defined in certain aspects, especially towards the body tattoo and focus point in her eyes. I believe the image has been more defined with highlights and shadows, as well as being sharpened to define her features more effectively. The use of light in the photograph is artificial, this is to insure the aspects of the photograph are completely visible to the viewer. I immediately noticed the dark and contrasts with the light where the photo has been edited in a black and white filter. This has improved the image because of the variety of contrasts though-out the photo.
I believe Rankin has used a slow shutter speed setting so that he can focus on the subject and accurately assess the capture light.
I was personally attracted to this photograph because I like tattoos because it defines how creative a person is, and who they are. I particularly chose this image because it is unique and well developed. I would describe the mood of the photograph as creative, by how the photographer has purposely set the mood of the photograph by getting the model to pose is certain ways and add attitude to his photographs. I think that the photographer is trying to deliver a message with this particular photograph, the message Rankin delivered is that everyone should feel comfortable in there own skin and not be afraid of society’s expectation. My reason for this belief is because the model is revealing herself and her difference to everyone else.
Rankins photography has inspired me. I would like to produce similar photographs like these, so I can also be successful like the photographer.

My Response to Rankins photography
In these series of photos, i decided that i would use these two images of my little sister. These where my favorite photos as they both had plenty of contrast and the ideal amount of composition. As inspiration from Rankin, i edited my photos into black and white. In response, I found that after editing into black and white, like Rankin famously does in his photos it adds an increasing amount of emotion and originality to the photos. In the original photos, before editing i found that they looked more dull and lifeless compared to when they where transformed into black and white. Personally i find that editing in black and white provides a mysterious background story to the photo, this is so the viewer questions both the mood and purpose of the photograph. When i edited these two photos i knew that i wanted to enhanced there personal qualities to improve the overall appearance of the photographs from casual photographs, to vintage appearing images without unsuccessfully revealing that too much editing was used to improve the pair of images.
Pop art style
In response to Rankin, to show off editing skills we edited our photos in the style of Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol is an American artist from the 1900's. Warhol's art used many types of mixed media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening and film.Though he is best remembered for his paintings of Campbell's soup cans, he also created hundreds of other creations such as, commercial advertisements and films. During Andy's career he painted and created many different pieces of famous people and used repetition and bright colours to make his art more unique.
